Charles Tessier papers, 1810-1848.

Papers of Charles Tessier include a set of letters in French written by Tessier and J. John Nicholson came to Queensland in 1864 and purchased a property which was named "Grovely", and built "Grovely House". A proposal to build the church was raised in 1866, and work began in 1867. The foundation stone was laid by Sir George Bowen on 23 September 1867. The plan of the church was drawn by Charles Tiffin, Colonial Architect, and the church opened for services in February 1869. Born in New Orleans, La., Charles Tessier served as a clerk under four Spanish governors prior to the cession of Louisiana to the United States. He was subsequently appointed notary public of New Orleans. In 1812 he received the appointment of a captain of the infantry by U.S. President James Madison.
